As MBA Channel already reported on July 23, Peter Lorange has bought the controversial GSBA in Zurich. According to a report by the Financial Times, the former IMD president wants to focus primarily on company specific programs and buying the best professors from other business schools to this end.

The Mannheim Business School is expanding its range of programs and will be offering three-day intensive courses on selected management topics in September for the first time.

A lot of MBA programs claim to be international. All too often this is no more than rhetoric. The Graduate School of Business Administration (GSBA) in Zurich apparently wanted to outdo everyone with its World Executive MBA. “Six reputed universities and business schools in the most important economic hubs worldwide have closed academic ranks and on the initiative of the University of Chicago and GSBA Zurich have created the World Executive MBA,” gushed the school in fall of last year.

The Gisma Business School in Hanover introduced its first very own full-time professors on July 17th. Up until now professors primarily from the American partner school Purdue University have taught there. This new development is possible thanks to the incorporation of Gisma at the Leibniz University in Hanover last year.
Planned to start in August, the launch of the “Young Professional MBA” has been pushed back to January.

Online education has a long and winding history. Initially regarded by many institutions as a very interesting possibility to lower costs and offer students a way to learn themselves with interactive materials, it evolved into something that could be described as “education on steroids”.

Large private business schools in the US are currently struggling with a double whammy: already hit by much-reduced valuations in their endowment funds, their revenue is also suffering from a decline in applications from overseas. International students are thinking twice about handing over their recession-hit cash for an education at an albeit prestigious Western school, reports “The Economist“.

The union of Ceram Business School and the Group ESC Lille will create the largest French business school in terms of student numbers with 5,600 students and 138 permanent professors. The new school - a name has yet to be decided - will span three sites in France in Lille, Paris and Sophia Antipolis near Nice. More campuses throughout the world are planned.

Business schools continue to see a positive trend with MBA and Masters programs. The picture is more divided when it comes to company specific executive education. One third of respondents reported a decrease, one third reported no change and one third even reported an increase in enrolments.

But although its unserious business practices are known, some renowned business schools nonetheless cooperate with the controversial Indian school.

The financial crisis threw a wrench into the works for the joint MBA program from the France-based HEC School of Management in Paris and the University of Hohenheim. The planned Executive MBA couldn’t start due to a lack of participants. But now the HEC is denying ever having officially offered the program in Germany.

The new “How and why MBAs buy an MBA” study by the ESMT offers trivial and cryptic findings. According to the study, a lack of professional experience is often a reason for difficulties in the application process and that’s why Asians also fail at European schools.

Thanks to a 12 million dollar donation from Jack Welch – the legendary former boss of General Electric – the brand new Jack Welch Management Institute at the Chancellor University in Ohio offers a new MBA program.

At an unofficial ceremony on June 3rd, the day before they received their MBAs, 400 students graduating from Harvard Business School swore an oath. Half of this year’s graduating class promised they would “serve the greater good”, “act with the utmost integrity” and guard against “decisions and behaviour that advance my own narrow ambitions, but harm the enterprise and the societies it serves.”
