Australia's Melbourne becomes Biotech Hub

Hundreds of jobs will be created in Melbourne with a 235 million Australien Dollar expansion of the continent’s largest biotech facility, CSL biopharmaceutical research complex in Broadmeadows, in Melbourne’s north.

The facility currently develops vaccines but the investment will be focused on supporting new research into cancer, blood disorders, inflammation, infection and the development of drugs for clinical trials. CSL chief executive Brian McNamee says life-saving therapies could be developed at the facility. Australia's federal state Victoria has earned itself a reputation as a biotech hub of the Asia-Pacific and is well on the way to becoming one of the world's top five biotech destinations. The CSL Group has offices in 27 countries around the world. (August 4th 2010)
