ESMT: Largest MBA class ever
News Bärbel Schwertfeger - 02.04.2010
At 40 students, the European School of Management and Technology (ESMT) in Berlin, has just started its largest class ever for its one-year full-time MBA program. Last year there were just 26 students. Nine of this year’s students received full scholarships and there were also several partial scholarships.
21 nationalities are represented among the students, including participants from the US, China, Kenya, the Ukraine and Vietnam. With seven participants each, the two largest groups are Germans and Indians. The average age of the participants is 29 years. Women make up 35 percent of the participants – a five-percent increase from the previous year, not least which can be attributed to the two full scholarships for women.
There were also three partial scholarships for participants from the BRIC countries, as well as additional performance-dependent scholarships. Five participants received scholarships from EADS, E.ON and ThyssenKrupp. Allianz and Deutsche Bank are also financing two “Corporate Fellowships.” They consist of a full scholarship and, following successful completion of the program, offer attractive job entry opportunities in one of the ESMT sponsor companies. Tuition fees are 38,000 euros for students paying for themselves and 50,000 euros for companies.
With 40 students, the ESMT has indeed been able to start its largest class ever, however it has nonetheless failed to reach the target it set in 2008 of acquiring 55 students.
The ESMT was founded in 2002 by 25 major German companies. In addition to a full-time MBA, the school also offers an Executive MBA and Executive Education programs.

Comments
As a current student in the ESMT program, I agree that it would have been nice to have 54 other classmates rather than 39. However, it is also my opinion that quality has higher importance than quantity, and in this regard, I believe ESMT has performed very well. To date, I am happily satisfied with the atmosphere in the classroom and thank the admissions office for a job well done.
