Fast forward: the one-year MBA

One-year MBA programmes have risen in demand and new offers reflect the new trend. In 2010, 48 per cent of students preferred a one-year programme compared to 38 per cent that voted for a two-year programme, when questioned for the QS TopMBA.com Applicant Survey.

One-year MBA programmes have been the preference in Europe for quite some time, but more schools in the U.S. are starting to accept the model now as well. U.S. schools that offer one-year MBA programmes are Babson College’s Olin Graduate School of Business, the Boston University School of Management, the University of Southern California’s Marshall School of Business and from next summer, Bentley University’s McCallum Graduate School of Business.

Bentley University’s McCallum Graduate School of Business for example targets students with five-plus years of work experience with its 11-month programme. Students will be taught lessons on value, the environment, innovation and leadership during four ten-week terms. During the one year, students will get work experience at host companies and government agencies for example and work on solutions to pressing business problems. Two of those experiences will take place overseas – one in a traditional market and one in an emerging market.
