Ford brings outsourced jobs back in-house

Ford Motor Company said it now plans to bring back to its plants nearly 2,000 jobs that had been outsourced to suppliers both in the U.S. and overseas. The figure is about 25 per cent more than Ford had previously agreed to bring back in-house during its negotiations with the United Auto Workers union three years ago, a reflection of the upturn in the auto maker’s bottom line. The company couldn’t provide a breakdown on how many would be new hires and how many of the positions would be filled by workers who are now on indefinite layoff.

The announcement comes as Ford now finds itself balancing its ongoing profitability against the concessions it demanded from the unions during the past three years. Ford reported a 2.7 billion dollar profit for 2009 and remained profitable in the first and second quarters of this year.

The company has already moved 1,340 jobs - formerly outsourced to parts suppliers in and outside of the U.S. - back to its 24 U.S. facilities, and plans to move 635 more jobs by 2012. Jobs have been brought back to such areas as the Sharonville, Ohio, transmission plant, the assembly plant in Wayne, Michigan, the Chicago stamping plant, the transmission plant in Sterling Heights, Michigan, and hybrid-vehicle battery operations in Ypsilanti, Michigan. These workers are building everything from battery packs to vehicle doors. Ford also expects to now build 1.5 million of its fuel-efficient EcoBoost engines by 2013, which is 200,000 more than its original forecast. (September 9th, 2010)
