How to get headhunted

Many of the best jobs in companies are never advertised. Head hunters go out and look for suitable candidates, but how can you be visible enough for a head hunter to become aware of you?

The most obvious way is to be good at what you do and gain a respected name in a respected brand. It also helps to get your name published in interviews or with articles for industry journals and trade publications. Always build your network regardless of where you are or if you are currently looking for a job. Make contact with recruiters and headhunters whilst you are not searching for a job for example! Build a relationship with them by asking them whom of their competitors they rate highly and use them for searching for other posts in your current company if possible. It can also help to network in forums and seminars, especially to stay visible for outsiders. For example make sure your name and organisation turns up on attendee lists of events.

A professional online profile on LinkedIn for example is also a good start. Through LinkedIn, you can join relevant groups and discussion forums and get your name out. Caution is sought, however, with Twitter and Facebook, if you use it for personal comments rather than professionally. Modest comments and contributions are fine, but rude language or offensive content can count against you when headhunters screen your profile.

Last but not least: register with the relevant recruitment agencies and jobs boards and keep your profile up-to-date.
