Employers: Where MBA Students Want to Work
News Barbara Bierach - 06.04.2009
For the third year in a row, search-engine giant Google tops the list of the most popular potential employers amongst MBA students, with consulting firm McKinsey & Company in second place. But further down the ranking, published yearly by the U.S. business magazine “Fortune“, there were many changes due to the financial crisis.
Gone is investment bank Lehman Brothers, which collapsed last autumn. Merrill Lynch is no longer an independent firm after being bought by Bank of America: it plummeted to place 55 from 18 last year. Other financial services firms managed to stay in the top 15, including J.P. Morgan, Morgan Stanley and Goldman Sachs.
For the survey 6000 MBA students, representing more than 400 universities, were interviewed, where they most want to work. This year big players like General Electric and Johnson & Johnson were able to stay in the top 15 thanks to their strong brand, but with consumer spending down, retail companies didn't fare as well as they have in the past. Starbucks slid to place 27 from 17, whilst discounter Target dropped 18 ranks to place 44. With the crisis MBA students are less concerned with a prospective employer's prestige and are broadening their horizons. They are more interested in finding innovative companies with positive work environments.
