MBA as winner of the financial crisis
Orientations Bärbel Schwertfeger - 09.29.2009
One-year MBA programs are more in demand than ever. Seven out of ten programs are registering increasing applicant numbers. This is the result of the latest analysis by the Graduate Management Admission Council.
On average, there were 21 percent more applicants for one-year programs than in the previous year. There was similar growth for the flexible programs that offer full-time and part-time options, with two thirds of such programs benefiting from increasing demand.
In contrast, there is no change in the two-year programs, which are predominantly offered in the US.
The situation is worse for the Executive MBA, with more than half (51 percent) of the programs reporting lower applicant numbers. Their average number per program sank by 25 percent. The case is different for part-time programs: 45 percent experienced a decrease, while 42 percent reported an increase.
Furthermore, the US is increasingly losing its appeal for foreign students, as merely 48 percent of the full-time programs reported an increase in international applicants. The rate was still at 79 percent the previous year.
332 business schools with a total of 667 programs were surveyed for the Application Trends Survey. At 226 schools and 453 programs, the US schools dominated the poll.
