What do you expect from an essay?

Stephanie Kluth

Answer by Stephanie Kluth

Essays give us a way to see what kind of person an applicant is - beyond the quantitative measurements of the GMAT, GPA, etc. We ask questions that allow us to see how the student views our core values as a school, from which we can decide if the student is a good match for our school's particular business philosophy and culture.

Creativity, clear structure, nice flow of story, personal integration. In St. Gallen the third essay is a small case, which candidates can choose themselves (from our website) and which they need to argue and defend in the interview.

An essay should focus on three main issues: what is the motivation for doing an MBA, why exactly do you want to participate in this specific MBA and what can you contribute to the MBA as a student.

Christoph Jaugstetter

Answer by Christoph Jaugstetter

The essay within an MBA application should provide the admission and selection committee with a good understanding of how the applicant sees management and what is his/her idea of leadership. Additionally the essay has to fulfill two very important requirements: On the one hand it has to be as brief and precise as possible; on the other hand it should proof, that the applicant is aware of both the pros and cons of getting into a leadership position.
