Experts' Q&A » Answers
What type of personalities are you looking for? How do you select the class? And how can I improve my chances of being admitted?
Answer by Rachel Waites
At the University of Chicago Booth School of Business we admit 90 Executive MBA students to each of our three campuses every year. We aren’t looking for a specific personality, instead we consider each applicant on his/her individual merits, and we endeavour to build an interesting and diverse class. We look for diversity in terms of industry, academic background, nationality and goals. During the admissions interviews and in the essays, candidates should therefore focus on what they can bring to the class in terms of experience, goals and background. They should research the culture and ethos of Chicago Booth and explain why we match their requirements, and in turn, why they would make a great Chicago Booth student.

Our class is purposely limited to a maximum of 50 students in order to create a very personal and interactive experience. This means that the personality of our students is an extremely important aspect for us.The word that is often heard in the MBA selection world is “FIT”. This certainly applies to our program. It is about the program being the right fit for the candidate and the candidate being the right fit for the program. Throughout the application process we look for the right people to fit into an interactive environment. They must be motivated, internationally minded, and most importantly willing to both give and receive information and experiences. This includes a continual assessment of correspondence via e-mails, telephone calls, meetings at fairs and the school, essays and finally the interview.

We are looking for intelligent, cosmopolitan, creative, team-minded and responsible acting personalities. In our intensive and individual selection process we pay very close attention to which particular qualifications and experiences the applicants bring with them, from which the other members of the class and even the faculty lecturers can benefit. This is why in all of our degree courses we are also working with small groups, so-called “multi-competence teams” (MCTs). In those teams, our students deal with projects and case studies during their entire course of studies. The MCTs are put together heterogeneously in terms of nationality, professional experiences, personality, cultural experiences, age and gender. This is a program element that has proven successful and is perceived by the students as very enriching.

Selecting the right participants is key for most internationally recognized quality MBA programs and we are no exception here. More specifically, we aim to recruit a well-balanced mix of industries, professional experiences and cultures. Carefully selected participants with diverse backgrounds and perspectives contribute to the quality of the program to the same extent faculty does. Creating new ideas, reflecting on one’s current work and exchanging insights with like-minded international colleagues adds immeasurable value to the program. Therefore, we look for participants who have a clear career vision, who have shown a continuous career progress in the past and who can demonstrate that they can handle a demanding MBA program while developing their individual careers.

CEIBS aims to cultivate future business leaders; so we are not looking for a particular personality but a diverse combination of skills. This includes a number of factors such as: being a quick learner, having excellent analytical and communication skills, as well as great leadership potential. Also critical are excellent English language skills (our program is offered in English) and being a “good fit” in the CEIBS community, especially in possessing social awareness, strong ethics and integrity, as well as a very international outlook.
Successful applicants to the CEIBS MBA Program must first demonstrate that they have excelled in their career to date. A clear career history showing continuous career advancement as well as a rational plan for the future are definitely important factors. In addition, a competitive GMAT score, professional certification, and an impressive academic background will help as well.

We are looking for the brightest candidates, ones that can offer a unique perspective to the class, and those who can contribute to the life of the School. Specifically we look for candidates with good career progression in their industry, with a strong academic background, and some international exposure. Candidates should demonstrate good communication skills and are expected to share ideas, contribute to discussions and give presentations, and they should show collaborative instincts and have the ability to work and cooperate effectively in a team. We look at the application as a whole so none of these factors is of more importance than the other.
Candidates can improve their chances of being admitted by starting their applications in advance and applying early. The candidate should also be as informed as possible about the business school so that they can present themselves in the right way.
